Y5 Parachutes and Air Resistance

Pupils learn about how parachutes use air resistance to help slow falling objects down. They have to design a parachute that will help to land an egg on the ground, from approximately ten feet, without it breaking.

Learning Objectives:

  • PoS - identify the effects of air resistance, water resistance and friction, that act between moving surfaces
  • NaG - pupils should explore the effects of air resistance by observing how different objects such as parachutes and sycamore seeds fall
  • WS - pupils should design and make a variety of parachutes and carry out fair tests to determine which designs are the most effective
